Operation Red Wings Memorial 5k 2019
Join the Operation Red Wings Memorial virtual 5k and help us pay tribute to the 19 brave men who lost their lives as part of Operation Red Wings in 2005.
On June 28th, 2005, a 4-man SEAL recon team was inserted onto the slopes of Sawtalo Sar in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province. The mission was to locate and identify terrorist leader Ahmad Shah. The team was compromised when some local goat herders happened to cross their path. After letting these locals go, the 4-man unit was then attacked by Taliban terrorists. In the ensuing battle, SEALs Danny Dietz, Mike Murphy, and Matt Axelson were killed by enemy gun fire. The lone remaining SEAL, Marcus Luttrell, was critically injured.
However, during the firefight, team leader LT Mike Murphy intentionally exposed himself to enemy gun fire to get a clear communication signal out calling for the QRF. LT Murphy was shot multiple times, taking his life. LT Murphy would earn the CMH for his actions.
Luttrell would live through the ordeal and eventually return to the US and author the book “Lone Survivor.”
